The House Wren Workshop

On March 30, 2019, the Friends of Bombay Hook (FOBH) and the Bombay Hook NWR (BHNWR) held a House Wrens Workshop for the Delaware Breast Cancer Coalition ladies. The DE Breast Cancer Coalition has a Survivor Program called Nurture with Nature. Partnering with their Kent County office we worked with their Education and Survivorship Program Manager, Lois Wilkinson, to offer a House Wren program at the refuge. The day of the workshop speaker Irene Goverts presented a short program about the House Wren. Then, with modified nest box kits provided by Lois Wilkinson, our FOBH volunteers assisted the ladies in constructing House Wren boxes.

Gift bags provided by FOBH and a donated door prize were presented to the ladies. Then with great weather outside volunteer Janet Manchester led a bus tour of the refuge that included a hike on the Boardwalk Trail. In summary, the program was well received; and at the closing the ladies thanked us for a great day at the refuge.

A special thanks to all those Friends of Bombay Hook volunteers that setup in advance, prepared snacks and prepared beverages, assisted with the nest box construction and then cleaned up. A special thanks to Irene Goverts for speaking about the House Wren and Janet Manchester for providing a tour of the refuge. Also, thanks to Karen Dever for the fancy hand painting of our sample nest box and preparing the fruit trays. Thanks to Cathy Downes for assembling the gift bags for each of the ladies in attendance. Thanks to an anonymous donor for providing the Marcia Poling hand painted "House Wren Christmas Ball" as our Door Prize. Thanks to Brandi for making her special baked goods and John for donating the bird books. Also a big thank you to our other volunteers, Mark, Joanne, Anne Marie, Art and Cathy.
